2016 documentary by Israeli filmmaker Shimon Dotan

The Jerusalem Post says The Settlers is a must-see film for anyone who cares about Israel. It’s also a must-see film for anyone who wants to know more than the headlines tell us about the Israeli settlements on the West Bank:

How did the settler movement start? Why do Israelis and Jewish immigrants move to settlements? What is life like for them? How do settlers think about and relate to their Palestinian neighbors?

The Settlers (106 minutes; in Hebrew, English; written by Oron Adar and Shimon Dotan; produced by Estelle Fialon, Jonatan Aroch, Paul Cadieux, and Dotan) interweaves archival footage with interviews with settlers on the West Bank and others. It examines the origin and history of the settlements, and the political and financial forces that have sustained them and led to the current stalemate.

The documentary premiered at the January 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was also shown at the 2016 New York Film Festival. Its theatrical release was in March 2017.

The Romanian-born Israeli director, Shimon Dotan, has 13 feature length films to his credit and now teaches film in New York City.  Dotan previously won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award for his documentary Hot House in 2007.
